- American bank cards won’t work with most (practically all) Japanese ATMs. Most places do not accept credit or debit cards, so as soon as you get off the plane, get some cash.
- There are 7/11s everywhere and there is even a 7/11 bank in Japan. These are the only reliable ATMs that consistently work with American cards. So anytime you need cash, find a 7/11. The 7/11s also have a lot of nice snacks/breakfast options.
- Not everyone speaks English, so be prepared to have a bit of fun if you don’t speak Japanese!
- Gachapon are so much fun, and they’re everywhere.
- Japanese vending machines are AMAZING. They sell all sorts of hot and cold coffees, sodas, fizzy drinks, juices, teas… You won’t be able to try them all!
- Depending on where you travel, a SUICA card might be really useful for getting around on the metro so you don’t constantly have to buy tickets. If you’re in Japan for a while, you might want to consider getting the Japan Rail Pass. You’ll save a ton of money, but you have to get it in advance.
- Everyone smokes everywhere – even in restaurants – and it really sucks.
- Try to go to a sento (traditional Japanese bath) or onsen (hot springs bath). Men and women bathe separately in Japan.
- If you visit in spring, there will be so many different types of cherry blossom foods/sweets/drinks… you should try them all!
